The Chill Challenge

The Problem: Sub-zero operations are tough, and batteries become inefficient

Subzero temperatures are typical during the cold winter months in many parts of Russia, China, USA, Canada and North Europe.

Extreme cold waves, such as the one that occurred in winter 2019 putting 70% of the population of the United states under subzero temperatures, will be encountered more often in the future due to the Global Warming phenomenon.

Several remote strategic locations, such as the Antarctic and Arctic territories, experience very low average temperatures, as low as -18 °C.

Lithium-ion batteries have become an integral part of modern technology;

However, they perform poorly in the minus Celsius regime. Especially beyond -20 °C, Lithium-ion batteries are practically useless.

So, in cold environments:

  • Li-ion batteries either stop functioning and the operation shifts to alternative non-battery devices (if available) or
  • Li-ion batteries are supported by heating devices which increase the cost, complexity, and power consumption.
inem - the chill challenge

The Chill Challenge

Provide a sustainable energy storage solution so that people in cold climates can thrive, rather than survive.

In other words, the challenge is to provide populations & organizations -living and operating

in cold environments- with Li-ion batteries that are:

  • fully operational
  • efficient
  • and stand-alone

so that their daily living, mobility and safety are not compromised.
